A Latte in the morning
In Italy and abroad, there are many ways to start the day: an espresso, a cappuccino or a delicious Latte. Yes, because the language of breakfast is an international one, especially when it comes to hot caffeinated drinks.
Unlike café au lait, café Latte contains a larger quantity of hot milk and a touch of milk foam.
Caffelatte or Caffellatte in Italian, Latte or Café Latte in French, or simply ‘Latte’ for the English, the name differs, but the drink remains the same.
Be careful, however, not to confuse it with a cappuccino: the preparation and proportions are different, and even the cups lend themselves to different drinks.
A latte is not a cappuccino.
This drink of Italian origin is served in a special, unique cup. Large and spacious, the cup provides the perfect blend between a small amount of milk foam (unlike a cappuccino) and the strong, aromatic taste of espresso.
Although the ingredients are the same, make no mistake: the difference between a cappuccino and a latte is not just the amount of milk used. The real difference between the two drinks lies in the milk foam, which is greater in the cappuccino.
The Latte also lends itself to fantasy and situations: some prefer it with cold milk, others with hot milk, those who like its refreshing taste on a summer's morning, those who appreciate its warmth whatever the temperature outside and finally those who prefer to drink it with a touch of cocoa. There's a different version for every occasion and every taste.
The perfect cup for breakfast
Italians are very serious when it comes to tradition. It's not for nothing that every drink has its own cup, just as every type of wine has its own glass.
Latte coffee cups are no exception. Made from porcelain and fired at a very high temperature, between 1200 and 1400 degrees, to make them resistant to shocks and temperature variations, they are then varnished to make them shiny and waterproof. The straight latte cup is taller and wider than the cappuccino cup, for greater capacity.
Although we believe that the porcelain cup is the best way to serve café au lait, there are those who prefer to serve it in a glass. This has a number of advantages, including being able to see through the drink and its nuances to avoid pouring too much milk foam. The glass is also ideal for serving an iced latte.
The right amount
Each latte cup requires 25 ml of coffee and 200 ml of skimmed milk. However, quantities can vary according to personal taste. There are those who prefer a large quantity of coffee and those who prefer to enjoy the enveloping pleasure of milk above all else. That's why some of our cups can hold up to 500 ml of beverage, for an inordinate amount of pleasure!
